In this picture, a peasant woman returns home from the fields with her children, where she has been working all day. A big dog pulls the wheelbarrow (common in Brussels at that time) which is filled with pea vines, grass, and other litter collected in the day's work of weeding and clearing. The baby lies over the tangled mass, placed as on a triumphal chariot, crowned with a garland of field-flowers by his sister, and preceeded by his brother, blowing the cow's horn that summons the laborers to their dinner. The mother, pleased no doubt with her childs play, follows at the wagon's side, but too tired from her days work to give them more than a weary smile. The small house-dog, the baby's plaything shows a more boisterous joy, and leaps about the wagon with barking approval.
