This is an original illustrated magazine article that has been carefully extracted from an 1898 issue of Metropolitan Magazine.

Photos include:

Three views of the famous Washington Head, which is now blown out of existence:

ï Before the first blast
ï After the explosion
ï Its ultimate shatterings
ï A plant nearly opposite Spuyten Duyvil, which is eating its way into the Palisades
ï In this shanty are stored tons of dynamite to aid the work
ï The stone crusher which grinds the Palisades to atoms
ï A loading pier from which the crushed stone is shipped away
ï One of the ferry boats, which now is used as a house boat for the Italian laborers in the employ of one of the firms
