This is an original antique booklet published by Colgate & Co. in 1895. With lovely tinted illustrations throughout, the booklet tells the story of a group of friends on a sea voyage who come across a young bicyclist who tells them how a "New York firm" gathers ninety tons of rose leaves to perfume their soaps.
According to the back of the booklet:
This little pamphlet is not a manual of perfumery. Much less is it a catalogue.
It goes on to say, in part:
The Colgate Toilet Soaps alone number over a hundred different styles, carefully graded and adapted to suit all tastes and purses... The retail prices, in short, range from five cents to one dollar a cake... Besides the employment of an ever increasing factory force, the manufacture of such goods necessitates the assistance of a laboratory staff...
