Sarah Bernhardt was born at Paris on the 22d day of October, 1844. Her parents were Hollandaise Jews, but she was baptized and educated in a convent; she commenced her career on the stage in her fourteenth year, and has ever since held a prominent position.
She has also achieved some distinction as a painter and sculptor, but we question very much whether she would ever have been heard of in either, had she not been famous as an artist on the mimic stage. She holds in her hand a clay model of a piece of sculpture which she is moulding.
