1912 NY Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor Charity Ad

Original vintage magazine ad for the New York Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor. Interesting old ad asks people for contributions to help the poor. With various pictures of the less fortunate. Includes a photo of "bathing hour at Sea Breeze," and a "dip" in the tenement district.

This association was established in 1843 and stressed character building as a way to end poverty. Volunteers, usually middle-class Protestant laypersons, worked to get poor people to abstain from alcohol, become more self-disciplined, and acquire the work ethic.

Sample ad copy or tagline: Do you know that the New Yorker living below Fourteenth Street has an average of only 18 square feet of breathing space?
